.droughts

Drought occur in Australia frequently. They are unpleasant natural disasters, which can't be helped. A drought, in Australia, is a period when amount of rain is below average.

.about this

This website is about droughts, a natural disaster. It will include geographical processes responsible for it, maps describing where they occur in Australia, impacts on the environment, economy, and people, and response of society.

RESPONSES OF SOCIETY.

There is no prevention way to end drought.
The way that society reacts to drought;

People in drier areas, and who live in areas experiencing drought, have developed ways to live with it. They try their best to save water. Some of these ways include: taking short showers, washing their vehicles VERY rarely, sometimes bathing in creeks, or washing their clothes in creeks. It is important that people in rural areas such as the above don't suffer famine, or dehydration. People in urban areas have a limit set by the governement, of how much water they are permitted to consume.

IMPACTS OF THE HAZARD ON THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMY, AND PEOPLE.

Droughts have an impact on the environment, the economy, and people.

Impact on the environment;
Droughts can often cause wildfires, dust storms, pests such as locusts. Many animals die from lack of water, or become dehydrated.

Impact on the economy;
Bad effect on food production. When there isn't enough water for crops on a farm, there isn't enough food for the country, let alone enough for the countries the food was going to be exported to. A heavy loss is made. In addition to the crops, there wont be enough for livestock, and this would lead to even heavier losses.

Impact on the people;
People often have less water to use, have a limit of how much water they can consume, set by the government. People often get dehydrated if they live in a place where there is a drought.

MAP DESCRIBING AREAS AFFECTED.

There are many places in Australia affected by drought. Here, below, is a map to describe where. Note: Most droughts take place in desert regions.

GEOGRAPHICAL PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR DROUGHTS.

There are many geographical processes associated with droughts.
Some of these processes are:

Southern Oscillation;
A Southern Oscillation is a major pressure shift which occurs between the Asian and East Pacific regions. An extreme form of Southern Oscillation is El Nino. El Nino is a current which results in extremely dry conditions and lack of rainfall.

Global Warming;
Many people argue that human-induced global warming effects have contributed to the severity of droughts.

Rainfall;
A drought is a long period without rain, and when there is a lack of rainfall, droughts occur.

Evaporation;
The sun's heat evaporates all the moisture in the atmosphere, thus making it drier, and less chance of rainfall occurring, which leads to droughts.

Latitude;
A change in mid-latitude (60 degrees) depression tracks. These are related to weather changes, such as extreme dry weather.
